TELNET

Use

Connect (login) to a remote computer. Usually you must have an account on the remote computer; however, some resources on the Internet are accessed via TELNET (such as library catalogs). Most commonly, TELNET is used to emulate a Digital VT100 terminal, which can only display text information (i.e., no graphics).

Protocol

TELNET, TCP/IP

URL

telnet:computer
Example: telnet:lupine.mbl.edu

Comments

Most WWW browsers do not have built-in TELNET applications; however, they do allow you to specify a program to startup if a URL requires TELNET.

TELNET Clients

  • EWAN A good freeware client.
  • NetTerm: A good shareware client.
